Steering General information Steering consists of a steering wheel, a steering spindle, the gear and rack steering mechanism and the steering drive. The steering wheel has carving fastening on a spindle which transfers the operating movements to the steering mechanism. For simplification of driving at the parking there is a power steering. The coefficient of strengthening of the steering drive depends on engine speed. At high turns the coefficient of strengthening decreases, at low turns increases. Some models of the car have the hydraulic booster whose coefficient of strengthening depends on the speed of the movement (Servotronic system). Thanks to it the effort enclosed to a steering wheel decreases on the standing car. At a high speed of the movement the coefficient of strengthening of a wheel decreases that provides the best contact with the road and higher precision of management. The hydraulic booster consists of the oil pump, the tank of oil and oil pipelines. The oil pump is set in motion by a maple belt. The pump soaks up oil from the tank and gives it under pressure to the steering mechanism where the adjusting element of the hydraulic booster settles down. The safety cushion of the driver is located in a steering wheel. In case of strong head-on collision the control unit ignites a small charge in the airbag. The gases which are formed at the same time inflate a safety cushion during several milliseconds. This time is enough to amortize sharp movement forward of the top part of a trunk. Then within several seconds the pillow is blown off since gases come out through openings in a pillow. Under the terms of safety works with system of a safety cushion should be performed in auto repair shops of BMW.
