Check of levels of liquids

Below the procedures of check of level of liquid made through each 400 km of a run or weekly are described. The description of other checks of levels of liquid can be found further in the Sections devoted to specific procedures of service. Irrespective of check intervals according to the schedule do not assume that liquid followed under the car, such leaks indicate malfunction which should be eliminated immediately.

Liquids are the integral component of lubrication systems, coolings, brake and systems of washing of a windshield. In view of a gradual consumption and/or pollution of liquids in the course of normal operation of the car, they should be replaced periodically. Study the Section "Types and Volumes of the Applied Lubricants and Liquids" in Specifications before starting a liquid dolivaniye in any of the listed components.

At any check of level of liquid the car has to stand on a plain surface.

Visual control of leak of oil

At pollution of the engine oil and the raised consumption of oil check places of its possible leaks.


a) Open a cover of a jellied mouth and check laying.
b) Ventilation of a case: For example, ventilating hoses from a crankcase part of the block of cylinders to the case of camshafts and from the case of camshafts to the air collector case.
c) Laying of a cover of a head of cylinders.
d) Laying of a head of cylinders.
e) Laying of an oil filter: An oil filter around a flange.
f) Sealing ring of a drain stopper.
g) Oil pressure sensor.
h) Consolidation of the pallet of a case.
i) Forward and back epiploons of distributive and cranked shaft.

With leakage oil is distributed, as a rule, on the big surface of the engine that complicates definition of the place of leak. It is necessary to run for search of the place of leak of oil as follows:


1. Wash out the engine. Spray the engine an autocleaner and after a while spray water. Previously cover the generator with polyethylene.
2. Strew joints and consolidations at the engine with lime or powder of talc.
3. Check oil level. If necessary add.
4. Pass on the car. At the same time oil gets warm and becomes more fluid. For this purpose it is necessary to pass on the car about 30 km with rather high speed.
5. After that stop the car and survey it a lamp. Eliminate the found leaks.

Check of level of motive oil

The cover of a jellied mouth of oil is located in a cover of a head of cylinders - every time before opening it, be convinced that a surface around a mouth pure

Oil level in the engine has to be checked each 1000 km of a run. If necessary oil needs to be added.

The consumption of oil should not exceed 1 l on 1000 km of a run. The bigger expense indicates wear of maslootrazhatelny caps.


1. At measurement of level of oil the car has to stand on the flat horizontal platform.

2. After a stop of the engine wait not less than 3 min. that oil merged in the case pallet.

3. Take out the index of level of oil and wipe it with a pure rag.

4. Insert the index of level into place against the stop and again take out. Level of oil has to lie between two marks, it is desirable at the level or is close from top of them - if it not so, add oil to the top tag

5. Rise in level of oil from the minimum tag on the probe to maximum requires one liter of oil. Do not allow falling of level below the minimum tag since oil starvation can lead to damage of the engine. On the other hand, overflow of the engine oil (the dolivaniye is higher than the maximum mark) can be the reason of oiling of spark plugs, leak of oil or failure of epiploons.

6. Oil is filled in through a mouth on a cover of a head of cylinders. You watch that oil of the corresponding grade was added, for this purpose address Specifications.

Check of level of oil is the important preventive procedure. Continuous falling of level of oil indicates or existence of its leaks through the damaged epiploons or the weakened connections, or its burning out (internal leaks through worn-out piston rings or via the directing plugs of valves). Besides, it is necessary to pay attention and to a condition of the oil. If oil has dairy color or in its structure it is possible to notice water drops, it indicates possible violation of tightness of laying of a head of cylinders or existence of a crack in a head or the block of cylinders. In this case the engine should be repaired immediately. Run every time at measurement of level of oil before rubbing of an edge of the probe over it big and index hand fingers. If at the same time the particles of dirt or metal particles which stuck to the probe are found, oil should be replaced (address the Section Replacement of Motive Oil and Oil Filter)

Do not pour oil above the top tag. It will lead to increase in a consumption of oil and can cause damages of the engine and the catalytic converter.

On models 520i, 523i, 528i the broad tank (the cooler tank) fastens to a radiator - make sure that the level of liquid remains on or about a tag of "MAX".

On models 525tds the broad tank (the cooler tank) is located in a side part of a motive compartment - uncover and add a cooler.

Engine cooler

Do not allow hit of antifreeze on your skin or on the painted surfaces of the car. If all this occurred, immediately wash away antifreeze a plentiful amount of water. Antifreeze is extremely toxic in a case hit in an organism. Never leave it unguarded in an open container or spilled on a floor; children or animals its sweet smell can attract, and they can drink it. Agree with local authorities about destruction of the used antifreeze.

All cars considered in this manual are equipped with the cooling system with the excessive pressure of compensation type. The broad tank is located in a motive compartment and connected by a hose to a radiator. In process of an engine warming up in the course of its work the extending cooler fills a tank. When cooling the engine the cooler automatically comes back to the cooling system that provides maintenance of constant value of its level.

Check of level of a cooler in the tank has to be made regularly. Add 40%/60% mix of antifreeze on the basis of ethylene glycol with the clear water which is not containing lime.

Do not uncover a jellied mouth of a broad tank or a radiator cover for check of level of a cooler before full cooling of the engine! Level in the tank fluctuates depending on engine temperature. When the engine cold, the level of a cooler has to be higher than a tag of "LOW" on the tank. In process of heating of the engine level has to approach a tag of "FULL". If it not so, let's the engine cool down and then uncover the tank.

Banish the car and again measure cooler level. If to the necessary level it is required to add only a small amount of a cooler, then for this purpose it is possible to use clear water. However frequent additions of water will dilute antifreeze. To provide a normal ratio of antifreeze and water, always add to the necessary level the required mix.

If the level of a cooler falls regularly, then in system leak existence is possible. Examine a radiator, hoses, a cover of a mouth, a stopper of discharge and the water pump (address the Section Cooling System Liquid Replacement. Check of frost resistance of a cooler. Visual check of the cooling system) If no leaks are revealed, make check of tightness of a cover of a broad tank and a radiator in dealer office of the BMW service.

If you need to uncover, wait until the engine completely cools down, then wrap up a piece of thick rags around a cover and turn off it to the first emphasis. If at the same time from under a cover steam or a cooler begins to escape, let's the engine cool down a little more, and only then uncover.

It is necessary to check a condition of a cooler also. It has to be rather pure. If liquid has brown or rusty color, it is necessary to merge, wash out it system and to fill it with new mix. Even if the cooler looks normally, the corrosion inhibitors which are its part lose over time the efficiency therefore it should be replaced through certain periods.

Check tightness if liquid level quickly goes down, address the Section Check of the Cooling System.

Brake fluid and liquid of coupling

Brake fluid can do harm to your eyes and damage the painted surfaces of the car therefore be extremely careful at the treatment of her. Do not use brake fluid which long time stood open, or which there are more than one year. Brake fluid has property to absorb moisture from air that can lead to dangerous loss of efficiency of the brake system. Use only the recommended type of brake fluid. Mixing of various types of liquid (such as DOT 3 or 4 and DOT 5) can lead to failure of the brake system.

The tank of brake liquid / liquid of a hydraulic actuator of coupling is in a motive compartment. It has two cameras, everyone on the contour of braking. The carving stopper has an air vent. It is necessary to watch that it did not get littered.

The tank is transparent that allows to watch liquid level in it. Decrease in level below the mark MIN is signaled the driver by fire of a control lamp. Nevertheless, it is recommended to control the tank visually from time to time.


1. Remove a box of the microfilter of air of salon from the driver, address the Section Replacement of the Filter of Air of Salon.

2. Liquid level at the closed stopper should not be higher than the mark MAX and marks of a tag of "MIN" in the translucent tank are not lower - uncover and add liquid. For check of a control lamp press the contact specified by an arrow.

3. Fill in only brake fluid given in Specifications in system.

4. Owing to wear of a disk brake perhaps insignificant lowering of the level of brake fluid. It is considered normal.

5. If liquid level considerably goes down during a short period, it is a sign of leaks.

6. In this case it is necessary to reveal places of leak of liquid urgently. It is the best of all to make it on HUNDRED.

Check of operability of a control lamp


1. Include ignition. Release the parking brake.

2. Press a finger contact in a stopper of the tank, the shooter illustrations.

3. The assistant at the same time has to watch whether the control lamp in the dashboard block lights up. If the lamp does not light up, check an electric chain.

4. Install into place a box of the microfilter of air of salon (Section Replacement of the Filter of Air of Salon)

Windshield washer liquid

Liquid for washing of a windshield is in the plastic tank on the right in a motive compartment.

In areas with a temperate climate the system can be filled with usual water, but the tank has to be filled no more, than on two thirds that there was a free space on a case of expansion of water when freezing. In areas with cold climatic conditions it is necessary to use the special antifreeze for system of washing of a windshield reducing a liquid freezing point which can be got in any shop of automobile accessories. Usually it is on sale in the concentrated or ready look. If you bought the concentrated antifreeze, mix it with water according to the instruction of the producer on packing.

The tank glass - and faroomyvatel is located in the right part of a motive compartment

The tank of a washer of intensive purification of glasses is located in the right part of a motive compartment. Fill in a nonfreezing concentrate without diluting with water.

Do not use cooling system antifreeze - it will damage the painted surfaces of the car.
